Vietjet has previously faced criticism for its unconventional marketing strategies, which some have perceived as sexist. In addition to commercials featuring flight attendants in bikinis, the company has annually published a calendar showcasing air hostesses, pilots, and ground staff in revealing attire, reminiscent of the former Kingfisher Calendar. This approach is unexpected for a company led by a woman.

As Vietjet expands its services to India, the airline carries a reputation as the “bikini airline,” leading some to believe that flight attendants will be scantily clad. However, it’s important to note that the bikini-clad crew members were a temporary promotional tactic.

Undoubtedly, the pricing offered by Vietjet is highly attractive, with fares lower than even local train tickets. However, this affordability raises concerns about the potential for disruptive behavior from certain passengers, especially when combined with the availability of alcohol on international flights. There is a valid concern that some Indian men might exhibit inappropriate conduct, assuming a sense of entitlement towards the crew, exacerbated by the influence of alcohol.

It is crucial that Vietjet takes proactive measures to ensure the safety and respect of their crew members, as well as the overall comfort of all passengers. Preventive measures, such as clear policies and staff training, should be implemented to mitigate the risk of harassment or misconduct due to its past publicity & marketing as a bikini airline. The success of Vietjet’s expansion into India should not come at the cost of compromising the well-being and dignity of their employees or passengers.

Vietjet Air, with the tagline “enjoy flying,” is Vietnam’s first private airline, commencing operations in 2011. The airline heavily relied on controversial marketing strategies that some perceived as sexist. Reports indicate that Vietjet quickly became the country’s second-largest airline within a short span, attributable to its aggressive and unconventional marketing approaches. Currently, the airline serves 23 domestic and 10 international destinations.

Vietjet took the aviation industry by surprise when it decided to feature bikini-clad models in its advertisements. However, it’s important to note that these models were not actual flight attendants, and many were not even Vietnamese. The airline’s regular flight attendants do not wear bikinis during normal operations. This marketing gimmick, transitioning from traditional “Ao Dai” (Vietnamese clothing) to bikinis, proved successful in attracting significant attention and revenue for the airline.

One year after its establishment, Vietjet began publishing an annual calendar featuring scantily-clad models posing as flight attendants, pilots, and ground staff. This move attracted criticism, as some questioned whether the attire of air hostesses was given more importance than passenger safety and comfort.

Last year, when Vietjet announced its plans to connect to Jakarta, the Indonesian government ensured that the airline’s flight attendants were appropriately dressed. Vietjet acknowledged that its bikini stunts were not regular occurrences but rather tailored for specific occasions and appropriate destinations.

Vietjet was founded by Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, who became Vietnam’s first woman billionaire. She is also Vietnam’s second-richest person, with investments in HD Bank and real estate, including beach resorts.

Despite the negative publicity, Vietjet maintains a positive stance, believing that individuals have the right to wear what they choose. The airline’s managing director, Luu Duc Khanh, stated to Reuters, “We are not upset when people associate us with the bikini image. If that makes people delighted and happy, then we’ll be happy.”

But this is a thing of the past. Now at present, Vietjet is make great news as one the best low cost airlines with best service and on time flights. The air hostess, flight attendants are now the most fashionable and best trained cabin crew in the world. They are now giving a tough competition to indian budget flights like Indigo, spicejet and vistara.
